In The News December 7, 2009 The Deltas of Charlotte Foundation on Friday held its “Night of Elegance” to spotlight leaders in the community. The event was held at The Blake Hotel and was moderated by Mecklenburg County Commissioner Harold Cogdell Jr.
This year’s award recipients were: Coble & Snow law firm received the Achievement Award for Corporate Citizenship. C. Jennifer Coble, a graduate of Wake Forest University School of Law, and Kenneth Snow, a graduate of N.C. Central School of Law, believe it is their duty to use their education to enhance and enrich the community, the sorority said. Founded in August, 2003, Coble & Snow specializes in criminal law, real estate, small business matters and personal injury. The firm operates in both Carolinas and has a second office in Georgetown, S.C. *** GenerationEngage, the nonpartisan group that encourages people ages 18 – 30 to participate in politics and civic life, received the Achievement Award for Community Service. Founded in 2004, the organization is built on the premise that young people should be more involved in the communities where they live. The Washington, D.C.-based group now has chapters in New York, Silicon Valley, Miami, Raleigh and Charlotte. GenerationEngage Charlotte has served more then 4,500 people, using technology to connect them to elected officials and civic leaders. The Charlotte chapter, which opened in 2007, has been led by three young leaders: Decker Ngongang, currently executive director; Rod Garvin, who has moved to another leadership position in the community; and Ayofemi Kirby (pictured), the Charlotte community director. *** Charlotte Denise Bratton, a member of the Charlotte Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for 17 years and a general member of the sorority for 26 years, received the Achievement Award for Sisterhood & Service. Bratton was recognized last year for attending more chapter-organized, public service events than any other Delta member, and she is well on her way to achieving the same recognition this year. “Charlotte is a silent contributor and is not motivated by praise or accolades,” the sorority said. “She is motivated by her commitment to serve others. Bratton shares her time with the Parc at Sharon Amity, an assisted living facility, and is active in Delta Academy, an organization that mentors young girls. Bratton is a native of Roanoke, Va. She attends Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where she sings on the choir and is the choir’s librarian. She is also an active volunteer with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Friday, March 13, 2009
